## What is Project '44? Project '44 is a living archive of the Second World War — a long-term effort to map, document, and make accessible the primary source record of the conflict at every scale, from theatre to foxhole. At its core is an interactive map tracking over 150,000 unit positions across fifteen nations, tied to digitized war diaries, geotagged archival photographs, and operational histories. ## The Data Every position on the map is drawn from primary sources — war diaries, operational orders, situation reports, and intelligence summaries held at the Library and Archives Canada, The National Archives (UK), and the National Archives and Records Administration (US). The war diary corpus has been digitized, OCR-processed, and indexed into a searchable database, making it possible to trace a unit's movements day by day, link diary entries to map positions, and surface photographs taken at the same location. ## Who Builds This? Project '44 is operated by the **Canadian Research and Mapping Association (CRMA)**, a nonprofit organization dedicated to historical research and preservation. The underlying data infrastructure is developed and maintained by **Frame 44**, which makes the platform available to museums, archives, and educational institutions. ## Support the Project Project '44 is supported by its Patreon community.
