Originally formed as Hitler's personal bodyguard, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler evolved through the war from a motorized infantry regiment into one of Germany's most powerful armoured divisions. By 1944 it was a fully equipped panzer division with extensive combat experience on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.

The division fought in virtually every major German campaign: Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, and multiple campaigns on the Eastern Front including the battles for Kharkov and Kursk. Its equipment was consistently prioritized over standard Wehrmacht formations, giving it an outsized combat capability.

In the West, the division fought in the Normandy campaign and was heavily engaged in the Ardennes offensive in December 1944, during which elements of the division were responsible for the Malmedy Massacre — the murder of American prisoners of war. The division ended the war in Hungary and Austria.
